With Harry Potter on the rise, it seems there has been a revival in the interest of magic wands for kids!
You can eBay one or buy one online, but if you'd like a nice wand and want the feeling of pride that you "made it yourself", here's an easy way to do it! It is also a fun and easy project to do with kids! Plus I'll teach you a really cool trick how to perform a magic trick with that nifty new magic wand you just made with your own two hands!
What you'll need: A wooden dowel, approximately 14 inches long. Black and white paint and brushes.
Here we go!
First: Either go and find a wooden dowel about the diameter you'd like for a magic wand. If you don't have any at home, you can pick one up for very cheap at any hardware store or big box store. I suggest that the length be about 14 inches. I wouldn't go shorter than 12 inches.
Second: Go grab a can of black spray paint or a can of black paint and paint the entire wooden dowel black except for a few inches at either end of the dowel (that is where you will paint the white tips). Next paint the "tips" white. Then let her dry. Do touch up painting as necessary.
Third: Grab a scissors and a piece of white printer paper. Now cut a strip the same width as your white tips on the magic wand. Wrap it around your magic wand and cut off excess length of paper. Tape the paper shut so it is snug around the wand, but you want to be able to slide that fake "tip" up and down the wand, so don't wrap it too tight!
Now you have everything you need to perform magic - and you made it all by yourself! Awesome!
Here is how to use your new magic wand:
Wear a long sleeved shirt or jacket. Put the fake "tip" on the wand and slide it up to your thumb while holding the wand so only a few inches of the black wand are showing sandwiched in-between the top tip and the fake tip. Next, hold the wand in your hand with a few inches of the wand sticking up between your thumb and index finger. From the spectators view, it will look as if you are holding a very short wand!
Allow the wand to remain hidden behind your hand and wrist, and insert the remaining length of the wand into your shirt or jacket sleeve. So you will be holding the wand at about a 45 degree angle to conceal the length of the wand behind your hand, wrist and sleeve.
Now tell your spectator that you will magically pull the wand to make it larger - you need a big wand to do big magic tricks after all!
To stretch the wand simply grasp the wand with the other hand while keeping your thumb of the other hand holding the fake tip. As you pull the wand with the other hand (and keep hold of the fake tip with the other thumb and forefinger)it will look like your are magically stretching the wand - but you are just pulling the fake white tip down the length of your wand!
When you have pulled the wand all the way out of the one hand with the other, simply keep the fake white paper tip cupped in your fingers and pocket it while keeping the spectators eyes on the wand that was pulled from a few inches to over 14 inches long! He or she wont be looking at your hand with the fake tip, they will be looking at the wand that you just did a magic trick with (as should you be - your spectator will look where you look). Then simply pocket the fake tip while they are stunned and looking at the wand in your other hand.
